Dross cooling barrel is a specialised piece of equipment used in the aluminium processing and recycling industry to rapidly cool hot aluminium dross (slag) skimmed from melting furnaces.


Product Introduction

  • The main function is the rotary furnace(rubbing machine)extraction of aluminum and water after the heat aluminum dross by water spray heat exchange cooling and screening,the 700-900°C high temperature aluminum dross in a short period of time is reduced to below 50°C,avoid high temperature combustion and oxidation of aluminum dross,so as to improve the recovery of aluminum dross the rate of production,the economic benefit is obvious.

Why is rapid cooling of aluminium dross necessary?

Aluminium dross is a by-product that floats on the surface of molten aluminium during melting.It contains between 10% and 90% of metallic aluminium, making it a valuable recyclable resource.

Prevents oxidation and burning of aluminium:

– Freshly skimmed dross has a temperature as high as 700–900 °C. If left to cool naturally, the hot dross will continuously react with oxygen in the air, causing the metallic aluminium to burn and oxidise, resulting in a 5–10% aluminium loss.Rapid cooling effectively stops this process and significantly improves aluminium recovery.

Reduces harmful fumes:

– Natural cooling releases large amounts of harmful dust and gases.The cooling barrel, being a relatively sealed system, effectively suppresses dust emissions and improves the plant environment.


How does it work

The term “Dross Cooling Barrel” most commonly refers to the rotary cooling barrel, which operates as follows:

Loading:

– Hot aluminium dross is fed into an unlined steel drum through the inlet.

Rotation and cooling:

– The drum rotates slowly around its horizontal axis, continuously tumbling the dross inside. Simultaneously, cooling water is sprayed onto the outside of the drum. Heat is transferred through the drum wall to the water,achieving indirect water cooling – this avoids direct contact between water and the hot dross, which could be dangerous.

Discharge:

– The residence time inside the barrel is typically 10 to 20 minutes.After cooling,the dross is discharged through the outlet.
